When you open any car driving manual, or sit on the driving seat for the first time, the first thing that the instructor will tell are A, B, C. The C in the chronology of A, B, C with respect to car is clutch.

The clutch is commonly pressed when shifting the gears in normal cars. If you have always driven electric cars, then you may not be that familiar with clutch and what it does.

A car can generate a lot of power, but the thing which acts as a controlling force of the power is clutch. In this blog, we will read about some of the how’s to increase the life of the clutch of a car.

Don’t Use the Clutch as Footrest While Driving

Many people are in the habit of resting their foot on the clutch all the time while being on the driving seat. It is indeed a bad habit, if we say with respect to the clutch maintenance.

As the slightest pressure on the clutch, when it is not needed, will make the pressure plates to compress. This will bring about the friction plates to come in contact, and cause undue wear and tear. The clutch pedal should be completely pressed or left idle, and this will definitely get the clutch last long.

Avoid Using Brake and Clutch Together While Applying Brakes

People also use the brake and clutch together, when they have to apply brakes. This is also not a right thing to do. As this not only leads to unnecessary usage of clutch, but you are losing on a lot of braking power.

So, while braking, clutch should only be used, when it is important to change gears. Keeping the clutch pressed while braking can slow down the rate of braking, and can lead to an accident.

Engine Braking Should be Avoided

Many people tend to use engine braking to decrease the speed of their cars. While it can be useful in some situations, it can very hamper the life of the clutch. Engine braking, is not done with absolute perfection with the precise level of rev matching will have a bad impact on the clutch.

It can come in handier in motorcycles, but for cars, the braking force of four wheels and the weight of the kerb can decrease the speed of the car.  Engine braking can be used in some situations. For instance, while on a downward slope and there is a feeling that the use of brakes might bring about the skidding of the car, engine braking can be put to use. But generally, rely more on the brakes of the car on normal roads. Remember brake pads are much affordable to replace than clutch assemblies.

Coming to a Close

Clutch is used in every car, unless it is an electric car, and also scooters and motorcycles. And with the increasing income people are purchasing cars. So, this has a positive effect on the demand for clutch as well.
