Definition of the Electronic-Grade Polysilicon

Electronic-grade polysilicon is highly purified silicon used during the manufacture of these same electronic components, such as integrated circuits and solar photovoltaic cells. It is extremely pure, with very low levels of impurities required by semiconductor devices for adequate performance and reliability. This material is important in both industries: electronics and solar energy.

Electronics segment accounts for the largest market share by end-users

Based on the end-users, the market is divided into Aerospace, Automotive, Electronics, Solar Energy, and Others. The electronic industry dominates the market of electronic-grade polysilicon, which is fueled by the ubiquitous demand for semiconductor parts and components in a wide range of electronic devices. The rapid proliferation of consumer electronics such as cell phones, tablets, and laptops increases the demand for high-purity polysilicon due to the advancement of various technologies like artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, and 5G. These technologies' backbone, which is semiconductor chips, requires electronic-grade polysilicon for manufacture due to better purity and performance characteristics. Higher electronics content in areas such as autonomous driving and advanced safety systems within the automotive industry further augments demand within the electronics segment. This dominance by this segment is further fueled by continuous investments in semiconductor manufacturing plants and research, to be specifically seen in the Asia-Pacific region, home to major electronics and semiconductor manufacturers. Therefore, the electronics segment will retain its status as the largest and highest-growth end-user of electronic-grade polysilicon.

Asia Pacific accounted for the largest market share by Region

Based on the regions, the global market of Electronic-Grade Polysilicon has been segmented across North America, Europe, the Middle East & Africa, South America, and Asia-Pacific. The Asia Pacific region holds the largest share of the Electronic-Grade Polysilicon market. APAC—particularly China—has been the electronic and semiconductor manufacturing center of the world. This requires continuous supplies of high-purity polysilicon. In this respect, huge investments made by China in the production facilities for polysilicon, combined with an already well-established semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure, make it a leader in this market. Also, the growing interest in renewable sources of energy, with special emphasis on solar energy, has resulted in high demand for photovoltaic cells, thereby fueling polysilicon consumption. To add more to its gains, the competitive production costs, complemented by government acts and incentives, further improve APAC's market position. The technological advancements and collaborations taking place in the region help in pointedly innovating and bringing efficiency to polysilicon production, thus reinforcing it. On account of the growing demand for electronics and renewable energy across the world, the APAC region will retain its leadership in the electronic-grade polysilicon market through strategic initiatives and capacity expansions.
